Let me introduce you to the Italian cousin of the famous Irishcoffee… the amaretto coffee! This drink is part of the amaretto cocktail family. So for those who don’t know this alcohol, what does amaretto taste like?
Amaretto (which is the diminutive of bitter in Italian) is an alcohol titrating around 28 which presents with a flavour of bitter almonds (peach stones, apricots, etc). It can be found in tiramisu or consumed neat as an aperitif or digestive. For the recipe of the alcoholic coffee with amaretto, here we go!
Amaretto coffee: the recipe
For a good Italian coffeewithamaretto, the recipe is as follows.
Proportions:
- two tablespoons of Amaretto liqueur
- sugar to taste
- 2 espressos of hot coffee
- whipped cream
Prepare your espresso with your coffee machine. If you don’t have one, use filter coffee.
Put your hot coffee in a heatproof cup or glass with sugar and amaretto, top with whipped cream. It’s ready!
Iced coffee with amaretto
If you prefer fresh alcoholic coffees, go for the amaretto iced coffee.
The ingredients are the same as for the amaretto coffee recipe, you will need 5 or 6 more ice cubes and a shaker. Put your hot coffee with sugar, amaretto and ice cubes and shake for a few moments. Put the mixture in a glass and top with whipped cream.
What to replace the amaretto with?
For those who don’t drink alcohol ,amaretto with blackcoffee (hot or iced) can be adapted with a small change in the recipe: opt for a liquid extract of bitter almond, you stay in the same flavours without the alcohol.
Other gourmet uses of amaretto
You can use it to accompany your ice creams or frozen desserts. It can also be used to flavour Christmas logs, clafoutis, soft cakes and cakes.
