When you start your Dolce Gusto, it flashes red for 40 seconds while it warms up before turning green, indicating that the machine is ready. If the Dolce Gusto flashes red continuously without turning green, there is a problem with the water temperature. Let’s take a look at how to identify the reasons for the problem and how to repair a red flashing Dolce Gusto.
Why is my Dolce Gusto flashing red?
First of all, check that a capsule is not stuck. To do this, turn off the machine and check. If there are no capsules blocking the machine, follow our step-by-step tutorial to find the reason for the problem.
The resistor is defective
This is the component that heats the water. If it is faulty, the water will not rise in temperature. Follow our repair procedure to test and replace your heater.
Checking the temperature sensor
This is the part that informs the electronic board that the water is at temperature. If it is defective, this information is not transmitted. We explain how to test and change the temperature sensor.
The electronic board is faulty
This is the board that manages the various functions of the coffee machine (water pump, resistance, etc.). If it is faulty, it cannot manage the water heating. To test it, you need to call in a certified technician; it is not advisable to do it yourself. He will tell you if you need to replace it with a new one.

Testing and changing the temperature sensor
Unplug the Dolce Gusto and take a multimeter to the ohmmeter position. Here’s how to test the temperature sensor (at room temperature):
- Disconnect the probe from the electronic board.
- Put the tips of the multimeter on each terminal of the probe.
- The multimeter must display the ohmic value of the probe (value available on your manual or on the manufacturer’s website).
If the value displayed does not correspond to the value given by the manufacturer or the manual, you must replace it with a new one. To do this, disconnect the sensor from the electronic board and reconnect the new model.

Testing and changing the resistance
Take a multimeter and disconnect the Dolce Gusto from the power supply before working on it. Take the coffee machine apart and remove the resistor. Remove the plastic covers and disconnect the resistor.
Place the tips of the multimeter on each terminal of the resistor. Depending on the model of multimeter you have, you should get a value greater than zero or a beep. If this is the case, the resistor is functional, if not, the resistor must be changed for a new one.
To change it is simple, once disconnected you replace it with the new one and reconnect it to the same one.
My Dolce Gusto keeps flashing red, what can I do?
If it is still under warranty, call in a professional repairer, who will take care of it. If it is no longer under warranty, you need to evaluate the cost of the repair in relation to the cost of buying a new one.
